Project in progress

Description of my project: My project is about the government and how they try to control people because they are the “government.” In my project, I also discuss how the government threatens life, jobs, and homes.

List of theoretical ideas

1. “Power, for Weber, is the ability to bring about an intended outcome even when opposed by others.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.111; idea by Max Weber)

2. “Wealthy societies, for Parsons, have more resources than the poor societies and are thus more powerful.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.112; idea by Talcott Parsons)

3. “Power over is an approach that focuses on overcoming opposition or dominating others.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.112)

4. “Persuade is to get people’s compliance by convincing them of the correctness of your position and goals.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.113)

5. “Power tactics are the specific strategies people use to influence others in everyday life.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.115)

6. “Expert power arises from the perception that a person has superior knowledge in a particular area.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.115)

7. “Legitimate power is exercised by those who invoke a feeling of obligation.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.115)

8. “Conservative power shifting which means once poor people are declared undeserving they also lose their political legitimacy.” (Introductory Sociology Reader by R. Hensley and R. Castro, p.235)

9. “Networking involves reaching outside your immediate circle of contacts to find others who can help you.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.112)

10. “Privilege is a special advantage or benefit that not everyone enjoys.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, p.122)

How did I make it?

I decided to google anti government bumper stickers and read over the examples that were given. I then decided that I will create my own bumper stickers using bumper stickers and two different color sharpies.

Advice to others?

My advice to others on completing this project is to find a topic that you are compassionate about because it will be less complicated to complete. Other topics that one can explore are health care and addiction. A person should always complete the readings, pay attention in class, and always take notes.
