Finished Project

Project In Process sketch

Description of the Project

The issue I am addressing is the safety of sex workers. People often do not realize what sex workers are truly sacrificing themselves for. The meaning of my project is to show who and what they sacrifice for and that they also deserve safety.

List of Ideas

“This process can involve subtle or blatant discrimination, treating others unequally based on their background or other personal characteristics” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, pg. 124)

Double Bind-damned if you do, damned if you don’t. A situation in which a person must choose between equally unsatisfactory alternatives.” (Ted Talk: Toni Mac)

“Women have long been subjected to patriarchy, male domination through social institutions and cultural practices” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, pg 129)

“Weber looked at class in terms of life chances, the opportunities offered by a person’s economic position” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, pg 123; idea by Weber)

Legitimate power is voluntarily accepted by those who are affected. Weber’s idea of legitimate power is sometimes translated as “authority”. (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, pg. 119)

“To coerce is to force compliance by threatening, intimidating, pressuring, or harming someone.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, pg 114)

Grievability-worth/prestige of a body” (Judith Butler)

“As we have seen, different groups have varying degrees of power within a society, a situation that inevitably produces inequality, the unequal distribution of resources among groups of people.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes,pg 123)

Social closure is the process whereby a status group maximizes its own advantages by restricting access to rewards only to members of the group.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, pg 124)

“A caste system features stratification based on various ascribed characteristics determined at birth.” (Experience Sociology by D. Croteau and W. Hoynes, pg 126)

How did you make it?

I was on google and came across a picture called “The Skirt of Sacrifice”. This really stood out to me because the picture itself showed how much a sex worker sacrifices. I took that idea and created my own multimedia piece using cloth, popsicle sticks, and paint.

Advice to Others

My advice is to put the time and effort into the readings by writing down basic definitions and the main points. Also, do not procrastinate with the project. Work on it weekly and show your progress. Find a topic you are truly passionate about or else it won’t be interesting.
